Descrizione
Il Sebastes mentella fu formalmente descritto per la prima volta nel 1951 dal biologo sovietico Valentin Ivanovich Travin con la località tipo indicata come le rive dell'isola dell'orso nel Mare di Barents. Lo scorfano dal becco è noto per ibridarsi con lo scorfano acadiano il S. fasciatus. Questa specie è classificata nel sottogenere Sebastes da alcune autorità. Il nome specifico mentella è un diminutivo di mentum
Diffusione
Si trova nell'Oceano Atlantico settentrionale. Si trova dall'isola di Baffin a sud fino alla Nuova Scozia , intorno alla Groenlandia e all'Islanda, lungo la dorsale Islanda-Faroes e a nord al largo della Norvegia fino alle Svalbard , Jan Mayen e al Mare di Barents. [1] Questa è una specie oceanica batipelagica che si trova a una profondità compresa tra 300 e 1.441 m.
